Common Signs Of A Radiator Leak

AMJ Auto Repair • May 10, 2024

Your car’s radiator keeps the engine cool and prevents overheating, so addressing any problems is vital. One common issue that many drivers encounter is a radiator leak. Here are some signs that indicate you may have a radiator leak:

Coolant puddles under the car: If you notice a puddle of bright green, yellow, or pinkish fluid under your vehicle after it has been parked for a while, it could be a sign of a radiator leak. Coolant has a distinct color and odor, making it relatively easy to identify.

Engine overheating: A leaking radiator can cause the engine to overheat, preventing the proper circulation of coolant. If your temperature gauge is consistently reading higher than usual or your dashboard warning light comes on, pull over safely and check for any signs of leakage.

Low coolant levels: Monitor your coolant levels by regularly checking the reservoir under the hood. If you need to top up the coolant frequently, it may indicate a leak in the radiator or elsewhere in the cooling system.

Visible damage to the radiator: Inspect the radiator for any visible signs of damage, such as cracks, corrosion, or bulging. Even small leaks can lead to significant issues if left untreated, so address them promptly.

Steam under the hood: If you see steam rising from under the hood, it could indicate that coolant leaks onto hot engine components and evaporates. Pull over immediately and allow the engine to cool down before investigating further.

If you notice any of these signs of a radiator leak, contact us to have your vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. Ignoring a radiator leak can lead to more severe engine damage and costly repairs. By promptly addressing the issue, you can ensure that your car stays running smoothly and avoid potentially dangerous situations on the road.
