When to Get an Oil Change for Your Vehicle

AMJ Auto Repair • May 1, 2023

If you own a car, you must get regular oil changes. Frequent oil changes are essential for keeping your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently and can extend the life of your engine. Knowing when to get an oil change is vital to proper maintenance and keeping your car in peak condition.

How Often Should I Get an Oil Change?

You should get an oil change every 3,000 miles or three months, depending on your vehicle type and the type of oil. Some vehicles require synthetic oils that last longer than traditional motor oils, meaning they don’t need to be changed as often. If you’re unsure how often your vehicle needs an oil change, check your owner’s manual or consult a professional auto repair shop.

Don’t Go Too Long Between Oil Changes

While neglecting your next oil change may be tempting if it’s not due yet, it could be costly in the long run. In addition to decreasing the efficiency of your engine, neglecting regular oil changes can also lead to severe damage. For example, failing to replace worn-out motor oil can cause sludge buildup in the engine, reducing fuel economy and leading to future expensive repairs.

Signs You Need an Oil Change

If you haven’t had an oil change recently but think you need one, a few signs can indicate whether it’s time. One sign is if your car starts making strange noises when accelerating or turning corners; this could show low motor oil levels in the engine. If your check engine light turns on, this could signal that something isn’t right with your engine and should be checked out by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. Finally, if your car has been running poorly lately or doesn’t seem like it’s getting enough fuel mileage as usual, it could mean that dirty motor oil is causing problems with efficiency and needs replacing ASAP.
