Minimizing Distractions While Driving
One of the most vital things to do while driving is maintaining our focus. Our eyes must remain on the road to not only keep us safe but also those who are driving around us.
It is so easy for us to become sidetracked and lose our focus and that is usually what leads us to either slamming on the brakes in front of a red light or accidentally drive over the grass on a highway from driving too much to the side. It is important to be safe and that is why we should continuously minimize distractions while driving.
Phone Usage
Because phones are within our reach and we are constantly receiving notifications they become our biggest distractions while driving. Before turning on your car, try to remember to put your phone in silent mode.
Listening to music and jamming out is almost everyone’s favorite thing to do while driving. Though it is fun and keeps your passengers happy and entertained it is also distracting especially when you do not necessarily like the song that is currently playing and you keep skipping songs one after another until you find one that you are satisfied with. Choose a playlist before driving off so you have a selection of songs that you like.
Wait to Eat at Home
Yes, this one is incredibly difficult especially when there are drive-thrus within a three-mile radius, but eating while driving is very distracting. If you are very hungry, it doesn’t hurt to pull over and eat in a parking lot.
Chewing while driving is also a choking hazard and you really don’t want to risk it when you’re driving over a speed bump. We promise, your stomach will survive until you are able to reach a full stop.
Pets Need to be Safe too
Having your cat or dog in the car with you is fun and they make great company, but they sometimes are energetic, and keeping them in one place can be difficult when they have a good amount of space to play. It is best to keep them in a crate or harness so they can be secure.
Your furry family member also needs to be safe and though they may be smaller than you they can generate a great number of pounds in projectile force. If you can, keep them in the backseat as well. They might be a little loud from complaining, but they’ll love you for taking them out in the first place.
