Signs My Car Needs a New Engine

AMJ Auto Repair • November 20, 2022

Some people never want to get rid of their cars because they mean the world to them. We understand this at our shop, which is why we rebuild or replace engines. Your engine is not going to last forever, even if you take excellent care of it. Eventually, it will need to be replaced because it has simply run out of juice. Let’s talk more about all of this below.

Constant Knocking

If your engine knocks all the time, you may have a brewing problem in the cylinder block. Unfortunately, this problem can damage the cylinder block or break a rod. If either of these things happens, you will not be able to drive your automobile because the engine won’t run. As such, bring your automobile to our shop if the engine knocks while it is running.

Constant Overheating

You also do not want your engine to overheat all the time. If it does, you may have a cracked engine block. This is serious damage that, at a minimum, will require a partial engine rebuild. Another thing that will require a partial engine rebuild is a cracked head gasket. This, too, can make your automobile overheat every time that you drive it.

Excessive Exhaust

It’s never a good thing to see a ton of exhaust in the rearview mirror while you are driving. Your vehicle is releasing excess exhaust because there is a fluid burn in the engine. This is a bad sign because it means you have a significant fluid leak. In fact, the fluid could be hemorrhaging. It’s better to have your vehicle towed to our shop if it is releasing a ton of exhaust.

Metal in the Oil

You definitely need a new engine if there is metal in the motor oil. The metal shavings are the disintegrating engine parts. We cannot repair these parts. It is better to replace the engine. Unfortunately, this can happen in classic automobiles. As such, check your oil regularly to make sure that there are no metal shavings in the oil.

Significant Power Loss

Finally, as we mentioned above, there will come a point when your engine runs out of juice. When this happens, there isn’t anything we can do to repair the problem. Simply put, your engine has reached the end of its life. In this case, we will need to replace the engine.

If you are having any of the problems listed above, call us to schedule a service appointment for your vehicle. We would be happy to inspect the engine and recommends the proper course of action.
